Princeton University is one of the oldest universities in the United States and is located in the quiet town of Princeton, New Jersey. On its historic, ivy-lined campus, Princeton hosts many events and organizations. The Princeton Tigers are members of the Ivy League and are known for their consistently strong men's and women's lacrosse teams. Freshmen and sophomores live in one of seven residential colleges that provide residential communities and dining services, but juniors and seniors have the option of joining one of more than a dozen dining clubs. Dining clubs are social and dining organizations for students. Princeton's unofficial motto, "Princeton in the Service of the Nation, in the Service of Mankind," reflects the university's commitment to community service.
Princeton University offers highly ranked graduate programs through the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs and the School of Engineering and Applied Science. A unique feature of Princeton's academic programs is that undergraduates are required to write a thesis and certain engineering students are required to complete an independent project. Notable alumni include President Woodrow Wilson, model/actress Brooke Shields, and former First Lady Michelle Obama. According to Princeton lore, if students leave campus through the FitzRandolph gates before graduation, they may be cursed to never graduate.
