Columbia University is a private school founded in 1754. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 8,902 (Fall 2022) and a campus area of 36 acres. Columbia University is ranked #13 in National Universities in the 2025 edition of Best Colleges.
Located in New York City, Columbia University is home to three undergraduate colleges-Columbia College, the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, and the School of General Studies-as well as a number of graduate and professional schools, including the highly ranked School of Business, the School of Law, and the College of Physicians and Surgeons. It also has a School of Dental Medicine and a School of Graduate Journalism.
Columbia University's main campus is located in the Morningside Heights neighborhood on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City. Columbia University Medical Center, home to the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, and Public Health, is located in the Washington Heights neighborhood of northern Manhattan.
Columbia University offers a range of student activities, including 28 Greek chapters. Over 90% students live on campus. Columbia is affiliated with Barnard Collegefor women, Union Theological Seminary and Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Distinguished alumni include Founding Father and first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court John Jay and former President Barack Obama. Columbia also administers the Pulitzer Prize.
