The University of Pittsburgh campus is located in the Oakland area, three miles from bustling downtown Pittsburgh. The city is home to strong professional sports teams such as the Steelers and Penguins, as well as dozens of unique cultural centers such as the Andy Warhol Museum, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. Students at the University of Pittsburgh receive free admission to these and other select museums throughout the academic year. Pittsburgh has three rivers, so kayaking, sailing, and fishing opportunities abound. City buses stop on campus every 10 to 15 minutes, and students can take public transportation into the city for free with their school ID. New students do not have to live on campus. The University of Pittsburgh has a large Greek community of nearly 40 fraternities and sororities. Liberal arts and science majors can earn practical credit for internships, research and teaching with the help of the university's Office of Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creative Activities. Pittsburgh Panthers athletic teams compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Atlantic Coast Conference Division I league. Pitt students are notorious for their fervent support at sporting events, especially at basketball games, where they form a riotous cheerleading squad known as the "Oakland Zoo." Through the school's "Loyalty Points" system, students who attend the most home athletic events are given priority in purchasing tickets for games when tickets are in short supply.

The university's School of Medicine, School of Education, and Swanson School of Engineering are nationally recognized. The medical school is particularly well regarded for its research with the highly ranked University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and it receives some of the highest funding from the National Institutes of Health. The university is also known for its green focus. Students and faculty work to find environmentally friendly neighborhood solutions at the school's Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation. The University of Pittsburgh has notable alumni in nearly every field of endeavor, including famous football players Mike Ditka and Dan Marino, former U.S. Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon, and the U.S. Army's first African-American four-star general, Roscoe Robinson Jr. (Roscoe Robinson Jr.), the first African-American four-star general in the U.S. Army.
