Michigan State University is a public university founded in 1855. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 40,483 (Fall 2023) and a campus of 5,192 acres. The university operates on a semester-based academic calendar. Michigan State University is ranked 63rd in the nation in the 2025 edition of Best Colleges. Michigan State University was the first land-grant university in the United States and has become a model of its kind. Michigan State is also home to one of the nation's only environmental journalism organizations, a solar-powered racing team and a student-run organic farm. Michigan State's graduate programs include the highly ranked College of Education and the popular Eli Broad College of Business.

Students can join more than 900 student clubs, including more than 60 fraternities and sororities. The university has one of the largest single-campus residence hall systems in the United States, and with few exceptions, freshmen are required to live on campus. Students can participate in more than 275 study abroad programs.
