Stony Brook University is one of 64 schools in the State University of New York (SUNY) system. It is located on the North Shore of Long Island and is accessible by car, train and ferry; many students choose to commute. New students are not required to live on campus. Every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. is Campus Life Time, when academics are suspended and students can enjoy free concerts, free food and a break from stressful classes. Each year, students gather for events such as the Ross Pond Regatta (a race for students to build their own cardboard boats) and the Shirley Strum Kenny Student Art Festival (a week-long showcase of student work). Students can also visit more than 300 student organizations on campus, including more than 30 fraternities and sororities. On the track, the Stony Brook Seawolves compete in the American Collegiate Athletic Association's America East Division I competition. For exercise off the field, students can bike or hike around Stony Brook's wooded campus, which includes the Ashley Schiff Park Reserve. For a taste of city life, New York City is about 60 miles from the school.
Stony Brook University has the only undergraduate journalism school in the SUNY system and the highly ranked Stony Brook University Medical Center. It also has a branch campus in Southampton and an academic building in Manhattan. Notable alumni include Patricia S. Cowings, the first woman in the United States to be trained as an astronaut, and Craig Allen, a meteorologist at WCBS Newsradio 880 in New York City.
