The University of California, San Diego (UCSD, also known as the University of California, San Diego) is a prestigious public university located in California, United States, and is a Tier 1 university in the United States, part of the University of California system, and is located in the La Jolla neighborhood of San Diego, Southern California. UCSD is located in the La Jolla neighborhood of San Diego, Southern California. Newsweek named UCSD the nation's "sexiest" place to study science because of its beautiful surroundings, pleasant climate, and beachfront campus. Founded in 1959, UCSD has an 866-hectare (12,990-acre) campus. Although it was founded just over fifty years ago, it is ranked among the top three universities in the University of California system, and is on par with UCLA in terms of academics. It is also among the top of the "Public Ivy", having produced twenty Nobel Prize winners, and is an important center of academic development in the United States. As a result, UCSD ranks 5th in the nation in terms of total university research grants, and even surpasses Berkeley and UCLA in the UC system.
