The University of Miami is a private university founded in 1925. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 12,883 (Fall 2023) and is located on a 239-acre campus in a suburban area. Ideally located in South Florida, the University of Miami is ideal for students who love the outdoors. With popular attractions such as South Beach, the Florida Keys, and Everglades National Park near the school, students have plenty of opportunities for water sports, hiking, and sunbathing. Downtown Miami, near the school, is also a thriving sports and cultural center. There are 2,500 students on campus who participate in nearly 30 fraternities and sororities. Students also have the option of joining more than 290 clubs and organizations. New students are required to live on campus and may reside in one of the university's five residential colleges. Modeled after the dormitory setups at Oxford and Cambridge Universities in the United Kingdom, the diverse communities combine living and studying with communal meals, poetry readings, sports and other activities. Through the Commuter Assistant Program, freshmen who don't live in the university's residence halls are paired with on-campus representatives to help them make a smooth transition to college life. The University of Miami's Division I athletic teams, known as the Hurricanes, compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division. The school's mascot is Sebastian the Ibis, a swamp bird known for weathering tropical storms.

The University of Miami is a prestigious research university where research opportunities begin at the undergraduate level. Annual campus events include the Canes Film Festival, which showcases student-produced films, and Sportsfest, a weekend competition between dormitory teams.Undergraduates are also known for upholding school spirit, such as the Burning of the Boat ceremony on Lake Osceola during Homecoming. Notable alumni of the University of Miami include actor Sylvester Stallone and entertainer Gloria Estefan.
