Howard University is a historically black university located in the heart of the District of Columbia where all undergraduate students complete a university-wide core curriculum. Required courses include English Composition and African American Studies. Students then have dozens of majors to choose from, including African American Studies, French, and Music Therapy. Outside of class, Howard students have the option of joining one of the school's many student organizations, including fraternities, sororities, and academic clubs.
The school has its own stop on the city's public transportation system, the Metro, and students can also drive to campus. However, new students are not eligible to use the campus parking lot. The school offers a range of male, female and co-ed dormitories on and off campus.
Howard University also has a number of graduate programs, including those in the School of Business, the School of Law, the School of Medicine, and the School of Engineering.
Notable Howard University alumni include Vice President Kamala Harris - the first woman elected vice president, the first black American elected vice president and the first South Asian American elected vice president; former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall; Pulitzer Prize winner Toni Morrison; and Emmy Award-winning actress Phylicia Rashad.
