The University of California, Irvine (UC Irvine, UC Irvine) is a comprehensive public university founded in 1965, the second youngest in the University of California system, located in Irvine, CA. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 29,503 (Fall 2023) and is located on a 1,475-acre campus in a suburban area. The campus calendar is quarterly based. UC Irvine is ranked 33rd among national universities in the 2025 edition of Best Colleges. In-state tuition and fees are $14,737 and out-of-state tuition and fees are $46,626.
UC Irvine is a research institution in Orange County that specializes in areas such as cancer and neuroscience in collaboration with the highly ranked UC Irvine Medical Center. UC Irvine's graduate programs are also highly regarded, with specialized courses offered in the Paul Merage School of Business and the Henry Samueli School of Engineering. Students have access to more than 500 student organizations, including nearly 50 fraternities and sororities. The Pacific Ocean is just five miles from campus. As a commuter school, the university offers on-campus housing. Freshmen are not required to live on campus, but more than three-quarters of them do. The university promotes green initiatives through student groups such as Gophers for Recycling and Conservation, and is highly regarded for its environmental practices.
