Binghamton University - State University of New York is a public institution that was founded in 1946. Binghamton University is located in southeastern New York and is rich in outdoor recreation. Although Binghamton University is called Binghamton University, it is actually located in the Binghamton suburb of Westminster, New York. The campus has a nature preserve with forests and ponds where students can hike, bike, and run. Through the Adventure Resource Center and the Outdoor Activities Program, students can participate in organized kayaking, hiking, and camping activities, or plan a hike on their own. Winter sports enthusiasts can ski and snowboard at Greek Peak, 30 miles from campus. On campus, annual student events include University Fest and Spring Fling, two outdoor celebrations with live music, carnival rides and food. There are more than 300 student organizations on campus, including nearly 60 recognized fraternities and sororities.

New students must live on campus. One benefit of living in an on-campus dormitory: free laundry. The Binghamton Bears play in the NCAA Division I America East Conference, and student fans form the Binghamton Bears Zoo Cheerleaders during basketball games. The school mascot is a panda named Baxter. On average, more than 9 out of 10 students stay on at SUNY Binghamton after their freshman year, one of the highest first-year retention rates in the nation.

Binghamton University is ranked among the top in New York State. Top ranked graduate programs include the Department of History, the Department of Public Administration, and the Department of Psychology. Additionally, Binghamton University is known for its efforts in sustainability. Notable alumni include Madeleine Smithberg, co-creator and former executive producer of The Daily Show; Andrew Bergman, writer of Blazing Saddles; and ESPN commentator Tony Kornheiser (Tony Kornheiser).
