The University of Brasilia was organized in 1960, almost the same age as the young city. The University of Brasilia has 20 faculties and 66 departments, with about 18,000 students and more than 2,000 teachers. The University of Brasilia, from the very beginning of its existence, held high the banner of reform, adopting the American model of running a school, canceling the traditional lectures; replacing the departmental system with the college system, and referring to the basic course scores of the secondary school years in addition to the entrance examination and assessment of the students' abilities when admitting new students.
