Purdue University Main Campus is a public institution that was founded in 1869. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 39,170 (Fall 2023) and a 2,468-acre campus located in the city. The university operates on a semester-based academic calendar. Purdue University's main campus is ranked 46th among national universities in the 2025 edition of Best Colleges. Purdue University's West Lafayette, Indiana campus is the main campus in the Purdue University System, which includes four other campuses in the state. Approximately 20% students participate in Greek life, and Purdue offers a variety of activities and organizations. Performing groups include the "All-American" marching band, six jazz bands and two symphony orchestras. Purdue's athletic teams, The Boilermakers, compete in Division I of the Big Ten Conference and are known for the dominance of their men's and women's basketball teams. Purdue's official mascot, the Boilermaker Special, is a railroad locomotive that is maintained and serviced by the student-run Purdue Reamer Club. While there is no requirement for students to live in on-campus residence halls, about one-third of undergraduate students live on campus.

Purdue University consists of 13 colleges, many of which serve both undergraduate and graduate students. Professional and graduate programs include the top-ranked College of Engineering, the Krannert School of Management, the College of Education, and the College of Pharmacy. The highly respected School of Aeronautics and Astronautics within Purdue's College of Engineering is known as the "Cradle of Astronauts." Purdue has a popular tradition: many students commemorate the beginning and end of their time at Purdue by running in any of the five fountains on campus. Notable alumni include legendary college basketball coach and player John Wooden, popcorn entrepreneur Orville Redenbacher and Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon.
