The University of Canterbury was founded in 1873, with 20,000 students, and is best known for its engineering program. Located in Christchurch, the capital of Canterbury province in New Zealand, it was originally located in the center of Christchurch, but moved to the ilam district in 1974. From there it is extremely easy to get to the city center and a range of cultural and recreational activities, including skiing on Mount Hart, and Christchurch is a must-visit location for the Southern Alps, Mount Cook and Queenstown. Christchurch is served by Christchurch International Airport and the city sits on the tip of the Canterbury Plains reaching out to the sea.
