Located in Hanover, New Hampshire, Dartmouth College offers a wide variety of student activities, including more than 30 NCAA Division I athletic teams. More than 90% of students live in on-campus residence halls, including student housing, fraternity and sorority houses, College-approved residence halls, and undergraduate clubs. Approximately 60% of students are members of Greek organizations, which are the center of social life at Dartmouth. The Outing Club is Dartmouth's most popular student organization, offering outdoor activities, adventures, equipment rentals and classes, and is the oldest and largest undergraduate outing club in the United States. Dartmouth is also the birthplace of the programming language BASIC.
Dartmouth College consists of undergraduate arts and sciences and engineering departments and four graduate programs, including the highly ranked Tuck School of Business, the Thiel School of Engineering, and the Geisel School of Medicine. The Carnegie Foundation lists Dartmouth College as "very active in research." More than 50% students participate in numerous off-campus programs offered in more than 20 countries around the world. Distinguished Dartmouth alumni include Theodor Geisel (famously known as Dr. Seuss), Shonda Rhimes, creator of the television series Grey's Anatomy, and former U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. The classic comedy movie Animal House is based on a series of stories about the Dartmouth fraternity.
