The University of Pennsylvania is a private school founded in 1740. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 9,995 (Fall 2023) on a 299-acre campus located in the city. The University of Pennsylvania is located in Philadelphia and was founded by Benjamin Franklin. The Quakers of the University of Pennsylvania boast more than 25 NCAA Division I athletic programs, compete in the Ivy League, and are known for their successful basketball and lacrosse teams. The University of Pennsylvania offers more than 10 collegiate residence halls, but many students also live off-campus in numerous apartments and dormitories. Approximately 20% of students participate in Greek life, which includes nearly 50 fraternities and sororities. The university also has many clubs and organizations, ranging from performance groups such as the Latin and Sorority Dance Clubs to student publications such as the Penn Political Review. Penn works closely with the West Philadelphia area through community service and advocacy groups.

The University of Pennsylvania has 12 colleges: five offer undergraduate and graduate programs, and seven offer only graduate programs. Highly ranked graduate programs at Penn include the Wharton School of Business, the School of Education, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the School of Law, and the School of Medicine. Other notable graduate programs at Penn include the School of Design and the School of Dentistry. Although secular, Penn State is rich in religious life with its Hillel for Jewish students, the Penn Newman Catholic Center, and the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Each year, more than 2,500 students participate in international study programs offered in more than 50 countries around the world. Notable Penn alumni include singer John Legend, poet William Carlos Williams and President Donald Trump.
