The Free University of Berlin (Freie Universität Berlin, FU Berlin) is a public university in Germany, founded in 1948 as the University of Berlin in 1810. During the Cold War, some of the students and faculty left from the University of Berlin in East Berlin and founded the Freie Universität Berlin in West Berlin in 1948, while the University of Berlin in East Berlin was renamed Humboldt University Berlin in 1949. The Free University of Berlin has nearly 35,000 students and more than 4,000 faculty members.
