Each spring, students present their research at the university's Student Research Forum.
Outside of academics, student-athletes can compete on UIC Flames athletic teams, which are often formidable opponents in the NCAA Division I Horizon League and are supported by mascot Sparky D. Dragon. For graduate students, the university has popular academic departments such as the College of Education, the College of Engineering and the Liata College of Business, and the UIC School of Medicine is the largest medical school in the U.S. Notable UIC alumni include former CNN anchor Bernard Shaw, blues musician Billy Branch, and famed lobbyist Tony Podesta.
