The full name of the University of Jena is Friedrich Schiller University of Jena (Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena) is located in the city of Jena, Thuringia, Germany, formerly known as the University of Jena, founded in 1558, is one of the oldest universities in Germany; in 1934 the name was changed to the University of Friedrich Schiller in honor of the German poet Friedrich Schiller. The optics program at the University of Jena has a long and prestigious history. The Master of Arts in German (DaF) is ranked among the ten best master's programs in Germany. As of 2005, there are 20,500 students and 340 professors at the University of Jena. The current rector, Klaus Dicke, is the 317th rector in the history of the university.
