The University of Sheffield (University of Sheffield) is one of the "Red Brick Universities" in the United Kingdom, a member of the Russell Group of Universities, whose history can be traced back to the founding of the Sheffield Medical School in 1828, and the merger of two other schools to form the University College of Sheffield in 1897, which was officially renamed as the University of Sheffield by Royal Charter in 1905. Royal Charter in 1905, officially renamed the University of Sheffield. The University of Sheffield has high levels of excellence in fields such as architecture, archaeology, and chemistry. The University of Sheffield was ranked 19th in the 2014 Times UK University Comprehensive Rankings.
