St. Petersburg State Technical University (full name in Russian: Санкт-Петербургский государственный политехнический университет ) was founded in 1899, in Soviet times was called Kalinin Institute of Technology, is one of the most prestigious universities in Russia, and a leader among the universities of the polytechnic world. It is a long-established polytechnic university, directly under the State Committee for Higher Education of Russia, with international influence. It is a world-renowned scientific research center of chemistry, chemical technology, biotechnology, nanotechnology, cybernetics and technology, as well as an educational center of modernization of Russian higher education. The University has 82 academicians of the Academy of Sciences and Engineering, 400 professors, 1,500 associate professors, more than 18,000 students and 1,500 foreign students. Today the University of Technology is one of the leading technical universities in Russia.
