The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro was officially established on July 7, 1920, but its higher education dates back to 1792 with the founding of the Royal School of Officers and to 1820 with the founding of the National School of Arts. In 1937, it was renamed the University of Brazil. In 1965, it was incorporated into the Federal Education System and was renamed the Federal University of Rio. The University has 49 faculties and more than 3,000 teachers. There are 49 faculties with more than 3,000 teachers, including the Faculty of Law and Economics, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities, the Faculty of Literature, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Forum of Culture and Science.
