The University of Cagliari is located in Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, Italy. Founded in 1606, it is the oldest university in Italy and one of the oldest in Europe, along with the oldest universities in Spain, Salamanca, Valladolid and Lerida. The University of Cagliari is one of the top ten national universities in Italy. The University of Cagliari was first founded by Emperor Roberto the Great and established by Carlos VI, with only economics, law, and other literary specialties at the beginning. At that time, only students from Europe were admitted. From the 16th century onwards, the University of Cagliari began to radiate a strong light, producing a number of famous scholars, such as the physiologist Rachael Spallanzani, the geometer Laurenzo Mascelloni, and the physicist Antonio Occhini, who later became rector of the University of Cagliari, to name but a few.
