The University of Florence, founded in 1321, is a new university with an ancient history. Originally named Studium florentinum, it was officially renamed the University of Florence (Italian: Università degli Studi di Firenze) by a law of 1923. The University has 12 faculties and currently enrolls about 60,000 students. The University of Florence is one of the most important modern institutions of higher education in Italy. The University has 69 university departments, a famous Natural History Museum, various services such as the University Language Centre, the Cultural Centre for Foreigners, the Information Centre, 10 Higher Education Centers for Research and Development, 5 Interdisciplinary Departmental Centers, 19 Inter-University Centers, and 27 Inter-University Programs.
