Founded in 1877, Technische Universität Darmstadt (Technological University of Darmstadt) is the oldest technical university in Germany and the only technical (TU) university in the state of Hesse, formerly known as the Ecole Polytechnique of the Grand Duchy of Hesse. It is located in Darmstadt, the city of science in Germany, in the metropolitan area of Frankfurt/Rhine-Main. It founded the world's first Department of Electrical Engineering in 1882, is a member of the consortium of nine outstanding German technical universities (TU9), and has twice been selected for the German University Excellence Program (Exzellenzinitiative). The Technical University of Darmstadt specializes in engineering and natural sciences, is the most popular German university for outstanding foreign scholars in the field of engineering, and has a high reputation in the German business community. Since its founding, the university has contributed to changing the world through pioneering teaching and research and many internationally recognized scholars.
