The University of Bremen was founded in 1584 as the Latin School of Bremen, and in 1610 it became a specialized university teaching law, medicine and philosophy until the end of the 18th century, when it was known as the Université française de Bremen during the Napoleonic period in 1810 and 1811, and then as the Université internationale de Bremen in 1948. In 2012, the University of Bremen became one of the 11 elite universities in Germany. The University of Bremen is one of the newest universities in Germany, but it has grown to become one of the largest and most powerful universities in the Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Bundesland), at least in terms of size and strength. The University of Bremen not only offers single or multiple bachelor's degrees in both arts and sciences under the permanent Anglo-American system, but also master's degrees in both arts and sciences, and traditional master's degrees under the former German system, especially in the purely technical specialties recognized by the traditional German universities: Medicine, Architecture, and Theory, which are still only offered as traditional master's degrees. This shows that the University of Bremen attaches as much importance to the preservation of localized traditions as it does to the educational trajectory of the new era.
