The University of Athens, the highest temple of Greek academia and the most influential and oldest university in Greece, was founded in 1837 and is located on the Acropolis. At present, the University of Athens has six faculties, including Politics, Medicine, Philosophy, Law, Science and Theology, covering 30 disciplines, and 75 doctoral degree-granting programs. In addition, Philosophy, Law, Medicine, Economics, Archaeology and History of Art are among the strongest disciplines at the University of Athens.
