Yamagata University (やまがただいがく、Yamagata University) was established in 1878 as a Japanese national university in Yamagata Prefecture and is now an independent corporation. In 1949, Yamagata High School, Yamagata Normal School, Yamagata Junior Normal School, Yonezawa Industrial College, and Yamagata Prefectural Agricultural and Forestry College were merged to form the new Yamagata University in accordance with the Law for the Establishment of National Universities, and it has a Faculty of Letters and Science, a Faculty of Education, a Faculty of Engineering, and a Faculty of Agriculture; in 1973, the Faculty of Medicine was established; in 2004, Yamagata University was transformed into a national university in accordance with the Law for the Establishment of National Universities. In 2005, the Faculty of Education was reorganized and the Faculty of Regional Education and Culture was established.
