The history of Pavia can be traced back to the Roman period, and from the 6th to the 8th century it was the capital of the Italian kingdom of the Lombards. The University of Pavia is located in the city and brings a strong cultural flavor to the city. The university has a very long history, having been founded in 1361 by an Italian nobleman, and is the second oldest university in Italy after the University of Bologna. The most famous graduate of the university is Volt, the inventor of the battery. The statue of this great physicist, who shocked the world, still stands on the left side of the university campus.
