Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul-UFRGS, located in Porto Alegre, is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Brazil. It was founded in 1895 as the School of Chemistry and Pharmacy, and later became the School of Engineering. In the early twentieth century, the university was established as a base for higher education in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and in 1934 it was founded as the University of Porto Discovery, and in 1974 it was officially upgraded to the status of a federal university. In 1934, it was established as the University of Discovery Harbor, and in 1974, it was officially upgraded to the Federal University. The university has the highest number of students and professors in the state.
