Founded in 1937, the National Gallery of Art (NGA) is an art museum located in Washington, D.C. Often abbreviated NGA, it is part of the U.S. government and managed by the Smithsonian Institution. The building itself is divided into two buildings, east and west, connected by underground passageways. This treasure trove of art boasts a collection of more than 40,000 pieces of important paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings from medieval to modern Europe and colonial to modern America, including works by masters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Manet, Monet, Van Gogh, and Picasso.
