Opened in 1998, Busan Museum of Art (BMA) presents the results of its academic research and collection in the field of monochrome paintings accumulated over the years, including Korean monochrome paintings from the 1970s to the beginning of the 21st century, with a total of 28 artists including Kim Chang-yeol, Lee U-hwan, Park Soo-bu, Lee Seung-jo, Kim Tae-ho, and Lee Kang-soo, among others, in this exhibition. Since the 1950s, when Korean avant-garde artists experimented with non-figurative creations, Korean monochrome paintings, which are of minimalist and abstract tendency, have been influenced by Western European abstraction, and in the 1970s, monochrome painters collectively rejected the reproduction of daily life on canvas, and instead explored the spiritual dimension of their works through repetitive daily behaviors, relying on the primitive values of nature.
