Amnesty International (AI), also known as Amnesty International, was founded in London on 28 May 1961 as an organization dedicated to publicizing cases of human rights violations in a country and bringing them to bear on global public opinion. The organization's purpose is to mobilize public opinion in favour of international institutions to guarantee freedom of expression and religion, as set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; and to work for the release of persons imprisoned for their beliefs and for the relief of their families. On the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Amnesty International was awarded the United Nations Prize for Human Rights and, in 1977, the Nobel Peace Prize.
