The University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) is a university in the Balearic Islands, Spain, founded in 1978, with its headquarters in Palma de Mallorca.

histories

The history of the University dates back to the Academy of Liuli, founded in 1483 in Palma by order of King Fernando II. It was forced to close in 1835 during the Carlos War. After that, students from the Balearic Islands had to go to the nearest town, Cervera, as well as to Barcelona.

In 1949, during the Franco period, the Liuli Institute was reopened, with the financial support of the University of Barcelona, to offer courses in philosophy and language and literature, and in 1972 the Faculties of Science and Letters were added, affiliated to the University of Barcelona and the Autonomous University of Barcelona. In March 1978, after the democratic transition, the Government issued a decree deciding to integrate the Liuli Polytechnic into the University of Palma.

In 1985 the university adopted its building charter and officially changed its name to the University of the Balearic Islands, and in 1998 a new campus was opened in Aleor, Ibiza and Menorca.
