Formerly known as Queen's College, founded in 1845, Cork is one of the oldest universities in Ireland and a member of the prestigious National University of Ireland consortium, which was officially renamed to its current name in 1997. The University of Cork is a research-intensive, comprehensive university that receives the most research funding of any Irish university each year. The University of Cork has a strong reputation for teaching and research in the basic sciences and engineering disciplines, with particular success in the fields of biotechnology, biomedicine, computer and information technology, food science, photonics and nanotechnology. It is home to a number of international research institutes, such as the National Research Center for Microelectronics, the National Research Center for Food and Biotechnology, the Institute of Biological Sciences, the Institute of Environmental Research, the Institute of Photonics and the Center for Informatics.
