United States Navy

The United States Navy (often abbreviated USN or U.S. Navy) is an integral part of the U.S. military and is responsible for naval-related matters. Formerly known as the Continental Navy, which was established in the War of Independence, the U.S. Navy has grown to become the world's most powerful naval force, with 11 aircraft carriers, more than 3,700 aircraft, and nearly 500,000 active and reserve military personnel (June 2013 data).
