The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) was originally a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1966 urging the United Nations to provide technical support in the area of population; it was later established as the Trust Fund for Population Activities in 1967; it was named the United Nations Foundation for Population Activities (UNFPA) and became operational in 1969; it was officially renamed the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in 1987 and is headquartered in New York.
