Lloyd's is the largest insurance society in the United Kingdom, originating in 1688 when English merchant Edward Lloyd opened a coffee house in Tower Street on the River Thames. Lloyd's is not only an insurance organization, but also an insurance marketplace, similar to the New York Stock Exchange, except that it only provides trading venues and services to its members, and does not write business itself. Lloyd's terms and conditions and declaration forms are widely recognized around the world, and the rates it sets are the benchmark for the global insurance industry.
