The predecessor of Nintendo was established on September 23, 1889, and was originally founded by Fajiro Yamauchi. Initially founded by Fajiro Yamauchi, the company mainly produced handmade cards. In 1963, the company officially changed its name to Nintendo Co., Ltd. and its business gradually shifted to electronics, and then developed the influential Famicom Nintendo console, which quickly became the world's largest TV game company. The introduction of the super Famicom, N64, GameCube, Wii and other consoles strengthened Nintendo's position in the TV game industry until today. Nintendo Co. is headquartered in Kyoto, Japan. Today, Nintendo has sold more than 2 billion copies of game software worldwide, created some of the most famous characters in gaming history, such as Mario and Donkey Kong, and created some of the most iconic games in gaming history, such as The Legend of Zelda and Pokémon. Nintendo manufactures and sells home game consoles and game software, including the Nintendo GameCube and the Game Boy line, the world's best-selling game console. Nintendo of America Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nintendo, located in Redmond, Washington, and serves as the center of Nintendo's operations in the Americas and Europe.
