The Montreal International Film Festival (MIFT) is a category A international film festival, the only competitive film festival in North America, founded in 1977 by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs of the Province of Quebec and held between August and September each year. The main activities of the festival include: feature film and short film competitions, side screenings of feature films and short films, special screenings of films from one country per session, professional viewings, special screenings of films from that country, special screenings of films from the Americas, conferences honoring new and veteran filmmakers, retrospectives, symposiums, the opening of an international film market, and a wide range of promotional activities.
