Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. is a major player in Japan's military industry, second only to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and is a major manufacturer of aircraft and submarines for the Japan Self-Defense Forces, with operations in the fields of aerospace, railroad vehicles, construction machinery, motorcycles, ships, machinery and equipment, and robotics. Kawasaki Heavy Industries was founded at the time of the Meiji Restoration as Kawasaki Tsukiji Shipbuilding Corporation in 1878, changed its name to Kawasaki Shipbuilding Corporation in 1896, and changed its name to Kawasaki Shipbuilding Corporation in 1939.
