Der Jahresumsatz beträgt etwa 2 Milliarden US-Dollar, die erste Auktion fand 1744 statt, und das Auktionshaus Christie's steht bis heute in hartem Wettbewerb. Sotheby's hat Napoleons St. Helena-Sammlung, Picassos Garçon à la Pipe, Bacons Triptychon von 1976 und andere Artefakte und Kunstwerke versteigert.
